Difference between Petrol Engine VS Diesel Engine

Difference between Petrol Engine VS Diesel Engine

Petrol Engine

            1.      Petrol engine takes a suitable mixture of Petrol and Air during suction stroke.
            2.      The compression ratio is approximately 6 to 10.
            3.      It is easy to start a petrol engine, since it has low compression ratio.
            4.      Petrol engine have more over heating problem due to low thermal efficiency.
            5.      Maintenance cost of petrol engine is less.
            6.      Running cost of petrol engine is high because of high fuel cost.
            7.      Petrol engine requires spark plug to ignite the mixture of fuel.
            8.      Such engines are usually light duty vehicles.
            9.      Generally, Petrol engines are high speed engines.
          10.    It’s based on Otto cycle.

Diesel Engine

1.      A diesel engine takes only air during the suction stroke.
2.      The compression ratio of diesel engine is approximately 14 to 25.
3.      Starting of diesel engine is difficult due to high compression ratio.
4.      These engines have less over heating problem as compared to Petrol engine.
5.      Maintenance cost is high, compared to petrol engine.
6.      Running cost of diesel engines is less due to cheaper fuel.
7.      A fuel injector injects fuel in spray or fine atomise form, at temperature about 600 *C.
8.      These engines are generally employed with heavy duty engines.
9.      These engines are low speed engines as compared to petrol engines.
10. Diesel engine is based on Diesel cycle.
